Artist's Comments

I...uhm...now that it's finished I really don't know what to say about it. I wish that the Wicked Witch of the West/Elphaba came out looking more like Margaret Hamilton, but I am really pleased with the Ray Bolger likeness. Fans of Wicked will know what I was trying to capture and fans of the MGM musical who haven't heard of Wicked will be scratching their heads. The idea was to marry the two musicals and show a Wicked happy ending for the Witch and the Scarecrow after the credits as it were.

Not sure who to credit for rights. The Scarecrow and the Wicked Witch of the west were created by L. Frank Baum (LFB...get it...Elphaba) and are now public domain. The likenesses from the MGM musical belong to MGM, or whoever owns their library now and the Elphaba and her story belong to Gregory Maguire. So...it's fan art, and I am certainly not making any money...so please don't sue me.

She doesn't look like Margaret Hamilton because she's smiling pleasantly, which Hamilton never does in the film. Also, Hamilton wore her hair up in the film, while Elphaba has it down for the second half of the play.

But yeah--Ray Bolger is spot-on. Excellent!

It's still surreal, even complete. And I agree with Karalora about her hair. I noticed in the WIP, you had it up, so...

But it's tender and sweet, and that's always awesome.

Yeah...you nailed it. I made the creative descision at the last minute to have her hair down, and I'm not sure I like it...but I was trying to be true to both version, which you just can't do really, as I found out. Trying to give her the stringy mass of hair and taking it down out of her hat, unlike Margaret Hamilton's, makes it look a bit like dreadlocks to me. I may work on it further, but I was frustrated that my last minute change from the sketch was turning out so odd looking.

'course there is really nothing I can do about the smile and still be true to the feelings of the piece. I'll just have to settle for a good Ray Bolger :D

Thanks for the comments!

Yeah...I think I may go back to the sketch as for how to do the hair. Im sure it's obvious that it was a last minute change and looks tacked on...and kinda rasta-mon.
:iconlokotei:
Yeah, a little dred-y.

ELPHABA
Kiss Me too fiercely
Hold me too tight
I need help believing
You're with me tonight
My wildest dreamings
Could not forsee
Lying beside you
With you wanting me

And just for this moment
As long as you're mine
I've lost all resistance
And crossed some border line
And if it turns out
It's over too fast
I'll make every last moment last
As long as you're mine

FIYERO
Maybe I'm brainless
Maybe I'm wise
But you've got me seeing
Through different eyes
Somehow I've fallen
Under your spell
And somehow I'm feeling
It's up that I fell

BOTH
Every moment
As long as you're mine
I'll wake up my body
And make up for lost time

FIYERO
Say there's no future
For us as a pair

BOTH
And though I may know
I don't care
Just for this moment
As long as you're mine
Come be how you want to
And see how bright we shine
Borrow the moonlight
Until it is through
And know I'll be here holding you
As long as you're mine

FIYERO
(spoken)
What is it?(etc.)

ELPHABA
(spoken)
It's just for the first time,
I feel ... wicked

Elphaba in this looks a bit like a combination between Idina Menzel and Stephanie J Block, in both face and hairstyle.
